SUMMARY:Fundraiser for veterans affected by the Maui wildfires and Hurricane Idalia
DESCRIPTION:E. F. Gilmore DAV to raise money for veterans affected by the Maui wildfires and Hurricane Idalia. \nJeffrey Blonder\, Commander of the E. F. Gilmore chapter of the Disabled American Veterans announce today that they will be raising funds to provide aid to veterans affected by the Maui wildfires and Hurricane Idalia.  All funds raised thru this effort will be donated to the DAV Disaster Relief Program.  The DAV Disaster Relief Program was created in 1968 and since the program’s inception in 1968\, over $19.5 million has been disbursed to veterans as a result of the DAV relief efforts.\n“When disasters strike\, DAV and its team of National Service Officers are on the ground to help our nation’s heroes. In 2022\, DAV provided a total of $2\,052\,500 emergency relief drafts and roughly 975 supply kits to the disaster relief program. Blonder said. \n“Your gift will help ensure we are able to continue to support our nation’s heroes during trying times such as these well into the future\, Commander Blonder added. \nAny resident who would like to contribute to this program can mail a check to E. F. Gilmore DAV\, 8 Pine Street\, Swampscott\, MA 01907.  In addition\, members of the DAV will be at Swampscott High School on Saturday September 9th from Noon – 2:00 P.M. to receive donations.

SUMMARY:Chair City Luge
DESCRIPTION:The Veterans Advancement Program staff & residents will battle each other in their homemade carts this year at the Chair City Luge at the Gardner Ale House\, Saturday September 30th at 10am. \nCome out and cheer them on! This year is Star Wars themed\, and we will be having Chewbacca pushed down hill by Hans Solo. \nThe Gardner Chair Luge is held in Downtown Gardner during the Oktoberfest “Party In The Street” at the Gardner Ale House. The idea is to get a chair\, put wheels on it\, put some kind of brakes and steering on it\, don a helmet and roll downhill\, starting at the Gardner Ale House and finishing at Beauregard Liquors. Teams of two build their ride and race each other down the street for about 200 yards\, trying not to crash\, and the winner is crowned champion. The Acadian Social Club features “Human Bumpers” and a locally known emcee who’s shtick and costume are always a surprise. A theme is chosen each year to add spice and laughter\, and direct the Lugers to dress up. \nThe Gardner Chair Luge was created in 2009. The event has since been taken on as a collaborative project by the Acadian Social Club\, Gardner Ale House\, and Gardner Festival Committee.
